In 2018 the Richmond Maritime Festival takes place on July 28th and 29th. The festival runs most years on the Saturday from 11 am until 7 pm, and on the Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm.
Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site is located at 5180 Westwater Drive in Steveston Village in the southwest corner of Richmond. It’s about 1.5 km from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, or just a 5-minute drive from Steveston’s other National Historic Site.
The Richmond Maritime Festival is a free, family-friendly event that includes educational and interactive activities, as well as an artisan market and live entertainment. There are street performers, local artists, boats to explore, craft activities, live music, food vendors and other forms of entertainment.
Every year at the Richmond Maritime Festival there are historic boats on display. In 2017, vessels that you could go on board and explore included the following (among others):
Merrie Ellen: a 1922 schooner built in False Creek but now based in the US.
Ella McKenze: a 1951 Vancouver-based tugboat.
Providence: a Gaff Ketch sailing boat built in 1903 and based in Steveston.
Gaia: a Vancouver-based Gaff-rigged Ketch built in 1921.
Hesquiat: a 1944 Steveston-based fishing vessel.
