A new modular housing project in Toronto is offering hope in the fight against homelessness. Built in just eight months, this 25-unit affordable complex now provides safe housing for people who were previously in shelters or living in tents.
Using mass timber modular construction, the project saved time and costs, with the building completed in just 21 working days on-site. Each compact studio includes a bathroom, kitchen, and living area — all in around 220 sq. ft.
Experts believe modular builds could play a key role in addressing Canada's growing housing needs, especially as over 80,000 people experienced homelessness in Ontario alone in 2024.
💭 Could this faster, more affordable building method be scaled across cities like Vancouver? Is modular housing a realistic part of the long-term solution?
